Basing – Water Effects.

A long time ago, I was once told that what makes a miniature look great is ‘bases and faces’. I always remembered this, maybe because it rhymes, so I have set aside some time to really think about how I am going to improve creating bases. For basic miniatures, I am happy to stick to using texture paints, however I want to stretch myself and try new things as well.

I have recently started collecting Ioneth Deepkin – so new that I have only assembled twelve of the miniatures, and have been thinking about a theme for them. I love water effects but wanted to look at something a bit different than just have them as a generic sea based force. I thought about different biomes within the water and settled upon a swamp theme. I shall be using greens and browns for the force themselves but more of that when I get to them.

I began by using water effects paint and seeing what it looked like over sand:

I also used plastic from the blister packs to try and create waves and splashes. They look ok, not great, and not very swampy. Alright for a first play around though.

I then thought about what a swamp looks like, and used Pinterest to do some research. I discovered that swamps have a lot of reeds and plants in them and have a green and brown look to the water as well. So I painted some bases, put different materials on for land. This is how they turned out:

I think the little plants and the reeds look good. I also really like the sand and the dark brown mud texture paint. I think the green on the bottm of the base it too green though. To me, it looks more like slime than the sludge at the bottom of a swamp. I want to try this again with a browner paint. I also want to try and see if I can add swamp weed into the water. This will take more than one layer of the texture paint however and might be reserved for the character bases.

It is a good start however, and I have a lot of ways forward to explore.

Lord of Change

I finished the Lord of Change today and I am glad I did so. I am glad to get the miniature off the table and into the cabinet so I no longer have to look at it. Not because the miniature is terrible, I just lost enthusiasm for it and wanted it done.

I started off using the airbrush to base coat it and try the blending on the wings. I have tried to use a mainly blue/green/yellow colour palette for the miniature, and I think this worked out well. I am especially pleased with the colour over the silver – watered down contrast paint – on the wings and the head of the staff:

I am not too thrilled with how the gold has turned out, but don’t think it looks awful. I’m glad to call the project done, and all in all, it’s not too bad. I did learn from it and that is the important part!

Affiliates and other Goblins

A couple of points I want to make today.

I have set up an affiliates link page on the blog, http://www.blackhandmarines.com/afiliates, and I am looking to add to the list. If you are interested in adding yourself to the page, please get in touch and I shall do so. Please only give me one option to start with, this may change in the future, but for now I think one per person is enough. I hope to create a reference place for other hobby blogs and maybe even generate some traffic. Who knows, it might even work.

In other news, I have finished painting somem squig hoppers and I am pleased with how they have turned out:

Not only were they a lot of fun to work on, but I used the airbrush for the base coats and that gave me some practice as finer detail work. Hopefully, they will find a new home soon!

Open Day: January 2020

I love going to Warhammer World, it has a really nice atmosphere and some great sights to see. The shops are always good to look around as well and Bugman’s Bar is good for food and relaxing. I love going on the open days too, because you get all of that, new releases and the chance to speak to the studio teams as well. I always come away feeling enthusiastic about new projects and with a buzz that lasts.

Today was the New Year Open Day and there were loads of new things to see! I have taken a wealth of pictures, as always so I will put these here first and then talk about them!

I saw a lot of amazing things today. I loved the new deredeo with the uber weapons load-out. I do have a soft spot for them though. I saw new Blood ANgel miniatures, which were cool. The Warcry Beasts were amazing. The new Tau lady was neat as well, though I am not a fan of them they looked good none the less.

The Exocrine is perhaps one of my all time favourites, because it has a silly grin on its face. How can I take it seriously with a smile like that??

I got to see a wicked diorama of Tzeentch creatures fighting the Dwarven Arkanauts, which was amazing. I love dioramas and made sure I took loads of pictures so I can use them as reference for my own work.

I also bought some cool stuff:

Personal projects this year will mostly include Blood Angels and Ioneth Deepkin, and reading.

Meet up – Element Games

This weekend, myself, Dave and Jenn went to meet some of the Warmongers at Element Games. It was really nice to put some faces to internet names and actaully speak to the people I have known for nearly three years face to face. There were also games going on, and it was good to see other people’s miniatures as well. I did manage to take some pictures of people and the games, so here we go:

Of course, it wouldn’t have been half as much fun without the people to chat and laugh with.

Thanks for a great day folks!

Shalaxi Helbane – Finished!

Mostly. I need to just touch up the base and tidy up the rim. The miniature is finished however and here he/she is! I am so very, very pleased with how this turned out:

IMG_2931IMG_2932IMG_2933IMG_2934IMG_2935IMG_2936IMG_2937IMG_2938IMG_2939IMG_2940IMG_2941IMG_2942

I am so pleased with the blue skin and how the layers came together. The purple cloth looks alright as well, though I think the fabric layers could vary in colour a bit more.

The gold non-metallic metal has a slightly warmer tone to it than I have done before and that is something I want to build on further in my next attempt at something like this. The silver could use more work I think but regardless of this, I am pleased!

Shalaxi – WIP

I’ve not had a great deal to blog about lately, other than seeing Rambo. Hobby wise, I have been painting the D&D scenary for Stronghold Games and I don’t think that would be exciting content if I posted about the eighth bookcase I have painted. I have also worked on Shalaxi today however and wanted to share the progress I have made. I’ve finished all the cloth and most of the skin now – all except the tail and I am pleased with the results again. I took some quick pictures with the lightbox, and without – I’ve yet to find a happy medium as yet with the lightbox, it always seems to bleach the colour out when I take pictures. Though I think this is probably due to them being taken on an old iPhone!

Anyway, here they are!

When it’s done, I will be selling Shalaxi, though I think that is some time off yet. I’m pleased so far at the very least.

Slaughterpriest

After the disappointment of the last miniatures I painted, I decided I needed to do something totally different before I moved on to the next set. I have had a slaughterpriest kicking around the house for a while and I wanted to practice some non metalic metals as it has been a while since I have done them. Last thing I want is to forget how to do them after all. The slaughterpriest seemed as good a mini as any to have a go at and so he became my willing volunteer.

I also tried something new out on the leather he wears as well, I wanted to give it an aged, cracked feel and I had a tutorial on Pinterest that I wanted to try, adding my own tweaks in here and there if I needed to. Here are the results:

IMG_2801IMG_2802IMG_2803IMG_2804IMG_2805IMG_2806

Best parts for me are the red plates with the blended highlights, and some of the areas of the brass look pretty good. Others could do with improving. Painting silver is pretty tough, but I am not going to improve that without practicing it. This is only the second time I have done so and I am hardly going to be an expert at it already. Just keep practicing!

Shalaxi and Layering

Normally, I wouldn’t blog about Works in Progress (WIPS) as I think it is better to wait until a miniature is done before I talk about it. However I am working on something a bit special I think and it is turning out a lot better than I hoped it would.

Layering was something I have practiced before, both at the Seige Studios painting course and with Gary, but both times have been on swords. I used something similar when I did Abaddon’s non-metallic metals as well, but I wanted to try the technique on something different and see how it worked. I had also seen another WIP of Shalaxi on the internet and so if I got stuck, I would have a frame of reference.

I like the colour blue and have the most experience with it I think, so I picked the four colours and got going. I used Caledor sky for the deep shading, Teclis blue and Temple Guard blue for the mid tones and Baharroth blue for the very light places. Each layer was exceptionally thin and it took a long time to build up the colours so they covered the area and then blend them into place. So far, I have spent 6 hours on the miniature, and I have only done the chest, upper thighs and face.

That said, I think it is already looking pretty special and I really am looking forward to doing the rest of the miniature. It might take a full month at this rate, but it will look good when it’s finished. Perhaps my best miniature yet!

IMG_2762IMG_2764IMG_2769

I also want to give the stockings and glove things it appears to be wearing a sheer look, so they are see through. I am not sure how I will do this just yet, but I have plenty of time to work this out.

Cypher Lords and a Webstore?

I have just finished painted the Cypher Lords for Warcry, and I must say they are amazing miniatures to work on. They are detailed, interesting and not too fiddly to stick together either. Easier than the Corvus Cabal for definite. I stuck to the colour scheme on the box as I have painted these with the idea of selling them in mind and wanted to stick to what I know is popular. Here they are:

IMG_2676 (2)IMG_2677 (2)IMG_2678 (2)IMG_2679 (2)IMG_2680IMG_2681

I am also going to add a page on this website with miniatures I have painted that are for sale. They will have a price next to them and people will be able to contact me if they are interested. This blog gets a fair bit of traffic now, when I post things and it might be another channel for me to sell bits and bobs – has to be worth a try!
