Vapnartak

I have never been to a Wargames Expo before and I was not too sure what to expect. I have been to several warboots however and I suppose I thought it would be like that. It was better in some ways and worse in others.

Three floors of awesome gaming goodness.

I really liked the wide range of traders there were. There was something for everyone and all the people I spoke to were exceptionally friendly. If they didn’t have what you wanted, they were more than eager to pass on details and find out the information for you. There were a lot of smiles and friendly people, which made the place seem very welcoming.

There was a lot going on as well, plenty to see and do. Hosts of participation games aimed at all ages were going on over the three floors but at no point did the place seem over-crowded or jammed in. I did not try any of the games but I did look on as others did. Gangs of Rome seems like a fun game to look at and so I may see if there is anything else to it.

This Indiana Jones style quiz – find the mummy – was a huge board that was artfully constructed. The pyramid, and other sections of the board, lifted up and you had to really look for the characters. It was 50p a go!

There was also a tournament, both Warhammer 40K and Warmachine, going on. I am not all that into tournament playing, that would be the forte of my husband, but we went for a look anyway as some pals were playing. While there, I spotted some familiar faces and with permission, I was able to take a picture:

Stunning miniatures and lovely players who took time out of their game to talk to us, albeit briefly.

I also managed to snag a couple of bargains and some material for an experiment as well, which always makes me happy. A lot of the gear at Vapnartak was for historical miniature gaming, which is not my area, but it was nice to see regardless. Nothing wrong with looking at other systems and snagging ideas after all.

All in all, it was a decent day.

January Open Day

The trek to Warhammer World is never a hard one, or that far. It’s a couple of hours away at most. We bought our tickets for the Open Day at the Vigilus day and off we went yesterday for another day of exciting reveals and fun. I met up with some lovely people from the Internet and actually played a game!

I am unsure where to start, so let’s begin with that game. Myself and Dave teamed up to play against Chris’ Necrons. I have never played against Necrons before; not hard, I’ve not played all that much. It was a fun game however.

Ahriman, his friend and some demons squared up against some necrons. It started off well, destroyers got destroyed and the battle progressed. However, Death Hex, a much needed spell, was failed by Ahriman and the tides of battle turned.

Before everything had a chance to go horribly wrong however, the Legion of Dave and Fondlechew dropped in. They soon realised they were in the wrong place (era) and hastily departed.

To cut the tale short, Ahriman decided to try and be a hero and went after the warlord. His glory was cut short when the warp said ‘No’ – Perils of the Warp is a huge hinderance to his escapades, though he did float up to the tall part of the board and look mildly cool. The best part of the game was when the Changeling warp bolted one of the Necron Lords and turned it into a Chaos Spawn. Hilarity ensued when the Chaos Spawn started attacking the remaining necrons… It wasn’t enough though. We lost the game in the end. It was a lot of fun though and that is what counts.

The other fun news was the released and the amazing atmosphere that was going on. There is always a buzz at these events and from the moment I met up with friends, new and old to the moment we left, it was fun. I painted Larry, a chaos warrior, in half an hour and he looked decent; pictures to follow.

I also got to meet Josh Reynolds and David Guymer, who signed a book for a good friend of mine in Canada. Both of them were very nice fellows and approachable, reminding me that the authors of the books I love are also people. I have nothing to fear from them and running away is just silly.

Last thing I am going to leave you with is this image of one of the released. The Dark Apostle is exceptionally exciting because Black Legion but… and I am sure you will have seen this on the internet already, this is the really exciting thing. I have circled it just to make sure you all see why I am so excited.

I do hope the Boss is going to turn up…

Team Mental

I’m not entirely sure what I am going to do with these guys. A lot of what I am painting has been bought second hand so I have had no real control over what they look like. I have no idea what his intentions were with these Marines I am currently painting. They see, to be a mishmash of different parts.

I think I will end up using them as veterans but I keep referring to them as Team Mental. No one wants to be on Team Mental, they’re all crazy…

They are fun to paint however and I will continue to keep at them, they’re not looking too shabby in my humble opinion.

Thinner

Hello readers!

Welcome back.

Since being back at work, I have had much less time to write and paint, which is a shame.

What are weekends made for?

This weekend saw me down at Stronghold Games – the local gaming store – set up for more than a few hours painting. I was only too pleased to get there and get on.

What I wanted to mention today was the joy of paint thinner. I know I have mentioned it in the past as something I rarely do but that has now changed.

Don’t get me wrong, I adore Citadel paints and the range of colours there are but sometimes, they’re just a bit too thick. I have been highlighting the armour of my marines in a much lighter shade than the base colour and found that as I was using a very small brush, the paint did not flow very well.

Enter the thinner pictured above. Mixing a small drop of this with the paint made it flow so much easier on the brush. It meant that it was easier to ad the highlights too.

I know I am not the best painter in the world but I do feel as though these models are really coming along nicely and the thinner has helped me to do so.

It is also very good at reviving paints that have gone hard. A problem with all acrylics, just mix in a few drops of this thinner and the paint will be useable once more. I am so pleased to be able to use tentacle pink once again! Hurrah!

Conditioner

I’ve spent this morning painting Space Marines with the other half – he was building them. I wasn’t going to post anything about it as I haven’t done anything overly fancy, just kept going with the line troops, nothing too interesting, as fun as they are.

I noticed a couple of my brushes were getting a bit ragged so I turned to the newest addition to my tools of the trade – brush conditioner. I first used it in the games store the other week and ordered some instantly.

I hate it when the brushes split, in the past it meant that I would either stop using them or have to buy some more. Not so anymore. Now, I rub them with some water into this lovely lemony smelling stuff, which through some method of unknown science, cleans and conditions them. It reforms the bristles and makes the brushes almost new again. Gone are the split bristles and unusable brushes.

I did comment that the store have done themselves out of some sales however as I will no longer need to replace the brushes quite as often as I did before.

For all of you painters out there that do not know about this stuff, get some! It will save you money and frustration in the long run I swear!

The legend of Leonaci Conucifer and the raging Azhut – Part 1

The series of clicks that echoed on the bridge of the Valiant sounded like nothing they had ever heard before. That is was language was clear, there was structure in the sounds, however what was making the noise was not. A few furtive looks were passed around the bridge. The source of the noise appeared to be a small planet in the little known Andemi system, just a short way off their course.
Skepphon Alvar, Chapter Master of the Black Hands, turned to his First Captain and frowned, “What do you think?” he asked.
Leonaci Conucifer knew that Alvar would have his thoughts on the matter already; he would want to know what his were and whether they differed. “Could be anything sir,” he replied.
“Worth investigating do you think?”
“What do we know about where it’s coming from?” He was handed a data-slate which had the sparse details on and a small frown puckered his craggy brow. Looking back to the Chapter Master he nodded, “A colony was established there once but no contact has been had since the Great Crusade, might as well take a look,” he said.
“It might be nothing,” Alvar said.
“But it might be something and we would be remiss in our duty if we ignored it,” Conucifer countered. The Chapter Master clapped him on the shoulder plate and nodded.
“My thoughts exactly,” he said.
***
Twenty hours later, the Valiant was anchored in orbit around Omman, the fourth planet in the Andemic system. The vibrant green ball below them hung suspended in the depths of space almost like a promise. Conucifer stood with his team, five reliable Astartes from the second company, knowing that they were walking into a complete mystery. Inside the Razorback that was to be their back up, they waited in silence.
It did not take long for the Thunderhawk to deposit them on the surface of the planet, leaving them there to perform their duty; discover what was happening on the surface of Omman and where the noises had come from. The moment they were out the Thunderhawk, they scanned the location for any signs of life. The location was near where the long range sensors of the Battle Barge had picked something up. It seemed the most likely place for sentient beings to exist. There was no evidence of life other than the plants around them.
Most of the planet surface was swamp, which gave off a foul smelling gas, it gave the planet the green appearance they had seen from space. This particular part of the planet however was mostly free from water and most vegetation, instead the dull grey rock showed through providing a stable surface for the Razorback to drive over.
“That ridge there,” indicated Conucifer, “If anything is going to be living here it would be on that patch of ground.”
Scitek Thelis, the chaplain of the squad, gave a nod. “It would make the most sense,” he agreed. The ground turned rockier after that and it soon became clear that the tank would not be able to follow them up the craggy part of the ridge; they would have to do that on foot.
The squad left the tank behind and climbed up the ridge, the lingering stink of swamp filtering through the breathers as they went. Everything here was tainted with the smell of rotten eggs. The only sound that could be heard was the crunch of stone under boots as they travelled up the steep slope.
“Sir!” Torfis, one of the squad, said. He gestured to a piece of rock jutting from the ground that appeared to have deep claw marks imbedded into it. Conucifer walked over for a closer look and nodded, the chaplain followed close behind.
“I don’t know about this,” Conucifer said with a shake of his head. “Looks like scratches.”
“From an animal perhaps?” Torfis asked.
“No, they’re too precise,” Thelis said “If you look, they’re marked just so. The distance between them is indicative of intelligence,” he said, pointing out the marks. It was subtle but it was there.
“Alright, keep moving, we’re bound to find something sooner or later,” Conucifer said, “And it’s likely to have claws!” he added. There was a half-hearted chuckle from the others and they began to move forward once again.
Cresting the ridge, the wind picked up, tugging at the five of them as they slowly made their way over the rugged terrain. At one end of the ridge was what appeared to be a cave mouth; the shadows were thick, the wind blowing towards the looming maw. Conucifer indicated that was the way they were going; there was nothing else on the ridge of note, except more rocks.
The approach to the mouth of the cave was silent, the wind dying the closer they got. The gloom deepened. A disturbing smell emanated from the cave, permeating the air. Conucifer’s grip tightened on his bolter. His finger rested on the small bar that would send shots into the darkness. Taking a deep breath, he forced the anticipation down; he needed to think rationally. The rest of the team would be thinking the same; it was always so just before stepping into the unknown.
Just to be sure, Conucifer made sure his chain sword was ready too. The weapon was a favourite of his, ever trusty; there were things a chain sword could do that a bolter couldn’t. The squad moved forward, approaching the dark mouth of the cave. A drip of water, amplified by the silence like a metronome, ticked away. Rocks crumbled. His head snapped around. Nothing.
Then it happened…

Seven Model Army…

I realise I have not posted anything new for a while so thought it was about time I did something. I have a story in the works which I shall be publishing on here in two parts over the next week but I wanted to show off the seven finished guys I have done while the weather was nice.

Photographing miniatures is perhaps  the worst part of the hobby. You can never seem to get decent images. I am limited to an iPad for a camera and natural lighting so when the sun came out today I decided it was time to do the best I could with what I have available. Here are the results:

Why do I have this?

I think the fella with the plasma gun looks  unsure as to why he has it in the first place. Perhaps that’s because he is leaning forward a little – whomever put these together (not me) did not take time to think about what they would look like finished and so some of them look a bit off.

I am pleased with how they look so far – they all need their company markings put on them and that will be done as soon as we manage to figure out who is going where. As they are, they’re not bad for a first attempt at painting a batch of Marines.

Space Marine Sunday

Sometimes, you have to stop and take stock of things before you know how to proceed. When the other half suggested we spend the day Sunday ‘Playing with Space Marines’, I was only too happy to comply.

Pretty sure there is space for more people here!

I will be the first to hold my hand up and say I don’t really have much of a clue about what I am doing, just picking bits up here and there and doing a lot of editing and reading around the subject. I do enjoy learning the new aspects of this hobby however and my enthusiasm is making up for a lot of what I do not know.

Seeing everything we have laid out in all its ‘glory’ sure helped, though not everything has been built yet. It illustrated that the focus of this Chapter is going to be the use of tanks, of which we have many.

The intention is to split the squads of ten into two groups of five and transport them in the Razorbacks to the field of battle. This helped me picture some of the background for how squads are trained, of which there will be a story coming soon featuring some of the characters I have drafted – some of which I have already written about, some of which are new.

I did spend the rest of the day painting a further two dudes, which takes us up to a grand total of three finished ones. Only nine hundred and ninety seven left to go! Now that my friends is progress!

The first of many

Highlights on the back.

Last night, I decided to move my painting efforts from the house to Stronghold Games while the other half played in a Magic tournament. It’s good to get out and about and drink someone elses coffee after all.

It was also the day when I decided to have a go at painting the first of the Black Hands. As I have mentioned before, I had blue in mind for the colour scheme, it was just knowing which shade and where I was going to put it. It took me about half hour of looking at the model to know what I was going to do.

I started off with a dark blue base colour – Kantor Blue and then using the trusty Psycho Brush to highlight in Alaitoc Blue and then final light catches in Hoeth Blue. I am rather pleased with how it turned out and can only work at perfecting the technique now.

I know the images are rather small here but you can click on them to see larger versions. I also only have an iPad in which to take pictures so I do apologize for the rubbishy resolution. I can only do so much after all!

Either way, it feels good to finally get the first dude painted and looking halfway decent. Only 999 more of the chapter to go!

Groovy shoulder-pads!

The Psycho

I never knew there was a hole in my painting equipment until I was presented with this monstrosity a few weeks ago. Thank you Dave at Stronghold!

The name of this particular brush I find is apt as there are about three bristles of hair in it. It is for insanely minute details and has been designed for war game miniature painters particularly.

I am in love with this brush. it had allowed me to add extra highlights on the figures I have been working on and to do some small free hand work that I would have struggled with otherwise. I do love a bit of free hand work now and then just to test those boundaries and make the models look that little bit cooler.

I’ve added a couple of pictures of the guy I worked on today. He is not finished as he seems to be lacking arms but the part I want to share is the detail on the leg done using The Psycho!

Check out the psycho’s work
