Suddenly, Night Lords!

I made it no real secret that I liked the Night Lords after reading the first few pages of Soul Hunter on my last post – the bit where one laughed when his friend got shot sold it for me, and if that wasn’t enough, I also read Prince of Crows and got some amused looks when I laughed out loud while I was reading in a coffee shop a few months back.

The Sevatar-off with Office on Twitter was an awesome contest and made me really think about what I want to learn to do with my painting next. I used blending techniques I have never tried before on that mini and I think they turned out really well. The there was the Master of Possession I used to practice lightning on as well.

So, I decided I can’t have just two Night Lords causing issues in the cabinet, I had to get some more. I might even be able to make a Kill Team out of them if I think carefully. Maybe.

The next guy has been given the nickname Gloves. I am using him to refine the blending process on ceramite and try to work out where the light would hit it if it came from a certain angle. I am sure this is a pre-requisite to Non Metallic Metallic painting (NMM) and that is something I want to practice. Here are some shots so far:

I still think the lines are a little sharp and could use more gradual colour changes, but this is me learning how to blend using this method and for a second attempt, I don’t think this is too bad.

I also tried something on his jet pack to make it look like it was glowing. I do think this worked well and I am pleased with it.

I still have a lot of work to go on Gloves, but he is coming along well. I am learning a whole lot from this too, which is the most important thing.

On a side note, I also listened to The Long Night while painting the other day. Sevatar’s voice was hilarious and at first I was put off. It grew on me though, and after listening to that tale, I just want to go and hug the poor fellow, maybe give him a cup of tea… which makes me horribly British.

Had a bit of a manic weekend with friends over and gaming. Aside from a little bit of Night Lord and some playing around with the Headnought, not a lot went on. So, today I picked up what I had left last week and ‘cracked on.’

I have finished Skragrott the Lune King this morning:

I also bought a 30K Ahriman today, as he was a good deal and I do so love painting that miniature. If you are interested in buying this Ahriman and discussing what you want him to look like, please get in touch.

I bought a Adeptus Titanicus Reaver Titan at the weekend as well, this shall be practice for the big Reaver that is still in the box – I am beginning to feel that it is time to break it out and get moving on that monster project.

Last point. I have just bought a place on the Seige Studios Master Class Painting Course at Element Games in August. This is a terrifying and exciting thing as I will be going on my own. I will be away from home all weekend learning how to paint. On one hand, this is terrifying, on the other, I will learn a huge amount when there. Amazing!

Finally, I am able to post my thoughts and comments on painting this amazing miniature. You all get to find out who won and which mini belonged to who.

First off, congratulations to Office, who was entry A. He was judged the winner.

I’m going to post the pictures of my efforts again as a reminder and then talk about what I learned:

This is the first time I have done layered blending like this. I used a lot of thin, very thin, coats of paint to gradually build up the lighting on the ceramite. You can see it in the bottom picture clearly on his leg and shoulder. This counted on me knowing where the light hit the armour and was a challenge for me to make consistent over the entire mini. There are spaces where I could have been more consistent with it, but now I know how to do this, I can refine the technique when painting other miniatures to a higher standard.

I am exceptionally pleased with the lightning, I think that looks neat. The metallic bronze of his armour trim worked well too, though I am not convinced the game colour paints are as good as I first thought. I’m going to try a few others out and see if they are better.

The base of the miniature looks dark, which is something the judges have indicated to me in their feedback. I agree with them. The colours blend together and the detail is lost in this case. If I were to do this again, I would change the steps from silver to dirty bronze and maybe change the pipe colours as well.

This does not mean I am displeased with the result. This is by far the best miniature I have ever painted – that includes the multitude of Ahriman/Ahrimen and I’ve learned a great deal as well. It was a massively positive experience and I would do do again.

Sevatar is now going to go and cause some trouble in the cabinet with the Ultramarines along with a couple of his Night Lord buddies that I have also painted up.

This leaves me with one question. Office, Game for a rematch?

Miniature Commissions

I want to start taking them. The ones I have done so far have been enjoyable and have been a very positive experience for me. ‘The Jerks’ – Kor Phaeron and Erebus were brilliant miniatures to paint, and Ahriman (30K) is always a delight.

However, getting my name out there for this is not going to be easy. Some steps have been taken, and they will need to be plugged away at consistently. That will not be enough. I have spoken to a local commission painter and have picked up some pointers and advice from him too.

The main one being I need to learn to use the air-brush. The thought terrifies me, I won’t lie but it is time to do something that scares me and push that boundary far away. The hobby room needs to be altered a bit to make room – this will happen at the weekend. Then, I will have to watch videos and just get on with it.

I have been given several tips I want to try out, one of them involving oil washes. I’ve also put together a list of things I need to pick up to help me – a tripod, a miniature light box and a few other bits as well.

My ‘to do’ list looks like this:

1) Learn to airbrush.

2) Paint every day – for extended periods of time, build up stamina.

3) Advertise a lot more.

4) Try the tips Gary gave me and work them into my painting routines.

5) Keep streaming and build a presence on other social media platforms.

Yesterday, Jenn and I sat and painted for 12 hours to raise money for cancer charities. It was a really fun day and we managed to paint our way through 18 miniatures. More importantly, we managed to raise £560, smashing out target through and through.

  • Hanging out on the twitch stream with some cool people.

Tomorrow! It’s tomorrow. Jenn and I paint for 12 hours without stopping to raise money for Cancer sufferers.

We have a range of minis and a lot of plans to get through them. It’s going to be an awesome day. We plan to stream it as well so there will be plenty of ways to get involved.

Diorama Update: The Plague Marine

I only have one Space Marine left to paint for this diorama now and that is the Khorne Berserker. He needs to be assembled after the Trigon and tank so I know what he is going to look like a bit better.

Today then, I painted the Plague Marine. I rather like Plague Marines, I feel they have an individual flavour to them. I had picked out an old metal one to use, however when he was next to the other marines, he looked too small, so I changed my mind and went for this one instead:

I liked his pose, it will look as though he is going to blast some Hormagaunt to pieces, which is his job! He will need final touch ups and adjustments here and there but for now, he is done.

I have also done some experimenting on the base in regards to texture. More on that soon, when the base itself is all done. I might make that one a tutorial, as it has been a real learning curve for me too.

Diorama Update: The Nurgling and foes

It seems I am only blogging about the Golden Demon diorama at the moment, it is only two weeks away however and I still have a long way to go to finish it. Soon, other subjects will be covered but right now, I have to stay focused.

Today’s efforts went into painting the Nurgling, the bug thing I found, and the Rippers. I had no idea what the bug thing was or where it came from until I asked the Twitter Hive Mind. It turns out it is a Wood Elf Tree Sprite. I have no idea how it ended up in my bits box but it seemed to fit the mood of the diorama so it got painted and will be added to the base.

Work on the base itself has continued, and that is shaping up really well. I shall do a complete post about that when it is done though, I don’t want to spoil that.

Tomorrow’s job shall be looking at the plague marine. I can do this. I can!!

Diorama Update: Hormagaunts

I managed to get all four Hormagaunts finished today, which was a bit of relief. Most of the medium miniatures for the diorama are now done. I feel like I am at least making some progress towards getting it finished. Two weeks today and it shall all be over. I am going to get it all done but I do know there is a long way to go yet.

Before I give an update on the ‘to do’ list for it, here are some shots of the Tyranids who will be harrassing the Ridiculous Six.

A few days ago, during a freak out, a friend suggested I made a list to organise my thoughts on where I am up to. It worked. I have it on a post it note next to my hobby desk. It looks a but like this:

Finish the base: Plaster it, texture it with sand, undercoat it, paint it.

Electronics within the tank, build the tank around it, paint the tank.

The Trigon and the Khorne berserker.

Place everything

Small miniatures – the Nurgling, the Rippers, other little features.

Highlight it all.

After that, it should be done and dusted, competition ready. Honestly, I do not think I will win at all, I’m convinced I am not at the right level for it. I do like the challenge however and I am doing this to prove I can. No one else had electronics last year and I am more than surprised that this is something that hasn’t been explored more by others. It is surprisingly easy to get the parts and learn how to do it.

Diorama Update – The Brood Lord

I have painted something that is not a Space Marine, this is a bit of a novelty and something rather different than the usual power armour. However, seeing as the diorama had beings other than Space Marines on it, I knew there would come a time where I had to get on and just paint.

I had a conversation with some friends a while ago about the colour scheme for the Tyranids I was going to paint. A few ideas were thrown around until I settled on Hive Fleet Behemoth. I wanted something to contrast the black and gold of the Black Legion and bright red and tuquoise seemed like the perfect hues to go for. I started with the Brood Lord because I really wanted to see what it was going to look like with the Night Lord jumping on his back. Here are the results:

I changed my usual technique for him as well as I wanted the Brood Lord to look more organic than the crisp lines of power armour. The red particularly involved a lot of drybrushing and layering up the colours. The spines were wet blended using a varying degree of turquoise. I am very pleased with how he turned out.

And for the curious among us, here is a rough mock-up of this section of the diorama:

Both need touch ups and adjustments, but that can happen when I come to glue them together properly and place them.
