Legit Members of the Black Legion…

I bought these two miniatures at a War Boot some time ago and have had them both half finished for almost as long. I had a bit of time to finally get them finished this week and I am really pleased with how they turned out. I do not collect Alpha Legion, however I thought these two looked interesting so decided to paint them as Black Legion. I wanted to show they were infiltrating, as the Alpha Legion do, and their disguises were not that good.

I used green contrast paint over silver to make the chips and then highlighted the edges with light grey to match the other highlights. I also painted the Chaos Star over the Alpha Legion symbol to add to the rubbishness of their disguise attempt. I am pleased with them as they are a bit of fun more than anything else.

The Alpha Legion…

As we all know, the Alpha Legion like to sneak into other legions in order to learn their secrets and steal them. It worked rather well during the Heresy and I suppose they are still up to their sneaking about in the 40K universe.

A while ago, at a Warboot, I picked up two Alpha Legion miniatures simply because they looked cool and were cheap. I want them to go in the Black Legion but decided to try a technique out to make them still look a bit Alpha Legion. I will show you the pictures and you can see what I mean:

As well as freehanding a Chaos Star over the Alpha Legion symbol – it is supposed to look a bit rubbish, I wanted to show chips of black paint. Under these I wanted the Alpha Legion sea green and I think I managed to get that to look alright. I painted on silver spots, painted the spots Aethermatic Blue and then edge highlighted them with both the dark grey and light grey to try to give that worn effect.

I have another Alpha Legion ‘specialist’ to go with this one so I will be trying the technique again and refining it as I learn.

I finished two miniatures today, that in itself is nothing remarkable. What I noticed was that both of them are colours that I have heard people say they find difficult. One of them is the new White Scar Marine, Kor’sarro Khan, and the other was the noise Marine:

The noise Marine I started at the beginning of the year and intended to use him for a diorama that I didn’t get around to finishing. I found him and baked him today and I think he looks great in the Black Legion colours.

Kor’sarro Khan was a challenge because white is a pain to get looking crisp. I think I did a decent job here though.

Talon of Horus – An Audio Book.

I will freely admit that in the past I have denounced the fact audio books exist and that I have no love for them. I always thought that it detracts something from reading, the characters have their own voice and hearing them in your head is a large part of the enjoyment of reading – for me at least. I always felt that in order to get close to the characters, you need to read them for yourself.

That said, I have started to listen to some while I am painting, as I got fed up of the radio and found watching Youtube too distratcing. When I saw Talon of Horus for the princy price of £2.99, I thought I had nothign to lose.

It was a most enjoyable experience. I really like the story anyway and have read it a few times since my first review some years ago when the blog started out. I felt Jonathan Keeble did a good job of giving the character’s voices and none of htem were far wrong from what I imagine them to be. Abaddon’s voice was gravelly, the World Eaters had mild cockney accents which worked really well in my mind, and Khayon came across was affably evil as well. He is still whiny, he still likes to lecture but it’s the Khayon we all know and love from before.

I think it helps that I already love The Black Legion, if I didn’t I’d not have a long running comic based on it’s Warmaster, but I did enjoy listening to the story and I am veyr glad they got the voices right – this is always my concern when listening to audio books.

Have a picture of Abaddon because I feel this needs to be in this post!

Diorama Update: The Plague Marine

I only have one Space Marine left to paint for this diorama now and that is the Khorne Berserker. He needs to be assembled after the Trigon and tank so I know what he is going to look like a bit better.

Today then, I painted the Plague Marine. I rather like Plague Marines, I feel they have an individual flavour to them. I had picked out an old metal one to use, however when he was next to the other marines, he looked too small, so I changed my mind and went for this one instead:

I liked his pose, it will look as though he is going to blast some Hormagaunt to pieces, which is his job! He will need final touch ups and adjustments here and there but for now, he is done.

I have also done some experimenting on the base in regards to texture. More on that soon, when the base itself is all done. I might make that one a tutorial, as it has been a real learning curve for me too.

Diorama Update

Now that the finishing work hype has worn off, I have had some time to get into the painting room and get on with some of the diorama. Time is certainly ticking and I know I have a long, long way to go before it will be even remotely ready.

I wanted to share where I am up to so far however. I have started to work on the Black Legion marines first of all. I started with the Night Lord body and claws, as he was the most together and you have to start somewhere.

He also now has a head, which is the last part of him that needs finishing off.

I have also made a start on the Noise Marine. I am very pleased with how he has gone so far. I tried out some neon paint that I had picked up to add some flair to his helmet. Just because he is in the Black Legion, doesn’t mean that he cannot have a wicked plume of hair. Now, the texture of the paint itself was sticky and not the easiest to work with, and the effect is not quite as vibrant as I wanted, I still like what it looks like.

There is still work to do on these miniatures, and a lot of the others too, but I wanted to post an update with how it was going so far. A friend of mine indicated that he looks a little like he should be in a BDSM film, however as a followr of Slaanesh, I think this works well.

The Black Legion

In my last post, I talked about the amazing new miniature that was Abaddon the Despoiler and the levels of excitement he managed to produce in myself. I felt that I should perhaps talk about his pals in this post.

Let’s start with some quality pictures I have collected of my particular favourites:

Haarken Worldclaimer was what sparked it all off. He was announced at the Open Day in December while I was at Warhammer World. I remember thinking he was stunning then and that I had to have him. I’ve collected Black Legion for a while and as they were the first Chaos Army I have for 40K, I have a bit of a spot for them. What I love about Haarken is the dynamic pose he is in. I can really imagine him getting all stabby in someone’s face. I look forward to getting him on the painting table.

The Master of Possession and the Greater Possessed are also lovely miniatures. Again, the posing on them is sinister, interesting and look like a lot of fun to work with.

Now let’s have a look at some new troops:

The new Chaos marines look way, way more interesting than the old ones. I have had some of the old ones on my painting table for ages now but don’t really do anything with them other than use them for testing paint and different schemes here and there.

These new ones will not be getting that treatment. They looks as bulky as you would expect but interesting as well. Ther also seems to be some scope for individualising them as well, but I will see when I get a chance to look at the sprues when the multi-part kit comes out. The terminators as well, though I am not sure how different they are from the old ones.

Then the man with the bog chopper was announced today. The Master of Executions looks like he will be a barrel of laughs to face on the battle field… Or not.

What I am trying to say here is that I want them all and I need to paint them up. I then want to go and smash people with them. That would be a great deal of fun!

The Black Legion.

It’s been a while since I posted here. Between the January ‘blues’ and being busy at work, I didn’t feel like I had much to talk about. However, while on the nerd holiday with good friends, I managed to get some painting in and I wanted to show what I had been doing.

Most of you know I am a bit of an Abaddon fan. I don’t know what it is about him, I like like the character and the whole ideal they carry. I also made a miniature of my husband as a space marine for Christmas and then painted it as to his requirements. Black and Gold it was, his reasoning being he would rather be bossed about by Khayon than Ahriman.

He was painted up and looked amazing but we soon realised that he needed some friends to poke about and make fun of. I also happened to have a box of rubrics lying around not doing anything. I built them up during one of our D&D sessions based on our core group of friends.

The person this rubric is based off is gay, which is why he has a rainbow painted on his crest. As I do the rest of them, their individual quirks will become known. Soon, there will be an entire squad of rubrics based on our friends. Incidentally, the friends think this is a brilliant idea as well. Not entirely sure how Abaddon will feel about this bunch of nutters joining him though.

January Open Day

The trek to Warhammer World is never a hard one, or that far. It’s a couple of hours away at most. We bought our tickets for the Open Day at the Vigilus day and off we went yesterday for another day of exciting reveals and fun. I met up with some lovely people from the Internet and actually played a game!

I am unsure where to start, so let’s begin with that game. Myself and Dave teamed up to play against Chris’ Necrons. I have never played against Necrons before; not hard, I’ve not played all that much. It was a fun game however.

Ahriman, his friend and some demons squared up against some necrons. It started off well, destroyers got destroyed and the battle progressed. However, Death Hex, a much needed spell, was failed by Ahriman and the tides of battle turned.

Before everything had a chance to go horribly wrong however, the Legion of Dave and Fondlechew dropped in. They soon realised they were in the wrong place (era) and hastily departed.

To cut the tale short, Ahriman decided to try and be a hero and went after the warlord. His glory was cut short when the warp said ‘No’ – Perils of the Warp is a huge hinderance to his escapades, though he did float up to the tall part of the board and look mildly cool. The best part of the game was when the Changeling warp bolted one of the Necron Lords and turned it into a Chaos Spawn. Hilarity ensued when the Chaos Spawn started attacking the remaining necrons… It wasn’t enough though. We lost the game in the end. It was a lot of fun though and that is what counts.

The other fun news was the released and the amazing atmosphere that was going on. There is always a buzz at these events and from the moment I met up with friends, new and old to the moment we left, it was fun. I painted Larry, a chaos warrior, in half an hour and he looked decent; pictures to follow.

I also got to meet Josh Reynolds and David Guymer, who signed a book for a good friend of mine in Canada. Both of them were very nice fellows and approachable, reminding me that the authors of the books I love are also people. I have nothing to fear from them and running away is just silly.

Last thing I am going to leave you with is this image of one of the released. The Dark Apostle is exceptionally exciting because Black Legion but… and I am sure you will have seen this on the internet already, this is the really exciting thing. I have circled it just to make sure you all see why I am so excited.

Display Cabinets

A few days ago, there was a discussion on twitter about display cases and such. I was asked for pictures of them. I also mentioned that there was an entire battle company of Ultramarines as well. I was once again asked for pictures. So, here we are with them…

This is the Black Legion cabinet, within dwells Abaddon, Teal, Falkus Kibre, Khayon the Black and a few pals of theirs. Also some fliers. The rest of the cabinet is filled with chaos space marines and other nasties.

The next cabinet contains the Thousand Sons, the walking around Ahriman and their chums – picture turned out grainy, it is evening and the light is sub par.

Here is the dreadnought attached to ‘Special Squad’ – a place dedicated to all questionably painted miniatures. Try and guess why he was sent there…

Between the Black Legion and the Thousand Sons is the Ultramarines. Nervous and unsure, they are all there to ensure no uber violence occurs when I am not about. Primaris and Guilliman at the top, regular dudes occupy the rest of the space.

Then there is the Death guard…

This is the whole lot – one wall of our house… There are also minis in many other places dotted around the place too.
