Infernal Master Kaphiri

I was super excited when the Hexfire box was announced, mostly because the Thousand Son character looked cool and I wanted him.

I’ve been working on him for a while and I am pleased to say he has turned out super well. I’m more than pleased with him! Here he is:

His cloak came out exactly how I wanted it to. He’d not be a proper sorcerer if he didn’t have a galaxy cloak after all! It’s been a while since I have painted one and I had a lot of fun layering up the colours.

The eye on the staff also came out well, adding a sense of menace to the mini.

Kaphiri is the second of three sorcerers who ‘run’ the Warband. They’re supposed to be a part of the cult of mutation, however not one of them has actually mutated yet. Kaphiri is the sensible one of the three. He is the one in charge of summoning things and trying to keep a rein on Menskera’s ideas – he has partial success at this.

Death Guard.

Just a quick post today to show off some Death Guard miniatures I have painted for a regular. They will be featured on his YouTube channel at some point in the near future.

I also submitted Ahriman and the Ahriman, because that is a hilarious diorama which I am still very proud of!

Legit Members of the Black Legion…

I bought these two miniatures at a War Boot some time ago and have had them both half finished for almost as long. I had a bit of time to finally get them finished this week and I am really pleased with how they turned out. I do not collect Alpha Legion, however I thought these two looked interesting so decided to paint them as Black Legion. I wanted to show they were infiltrating, as the Alpha Legion do, and their disguises were not that good.

I used green contrast paint over silver to make the chips and then highlighted the edges with light grey to match the other highlights. I also painted the Chaos Star over the Alpha Legion symbol to add to the rubbishness of their disguise attempt. I am pleased with them as they are a bit of fun more than anything else.

Freehand Banners

I have been working on some banners for a commission recently and I wanted to share them with you. Non metallic metals are not something I am overly confident with but they are a challenge that I really enjoy. The effect is striking and when done right, very effective. So, when I was asked to paint a couple of banners with chalices on them, I leapt at the chance to do so. Here are the minis:

The hardest part about this was getting the colour blend right. I wanted to create an old gold feel rather than it being super shiny. Chaos Marines grab me as not being the cleanest after all and their gear is thousands of years old. They are not new or shiny and so the gold would be tarnished.

I am pleased with how they turned out, and the owner of them is as well. I shall do a post in the not too distant future explaining the freehand process I go through, but for now, these minis are now on their way to their new owner!

Diorama – The Sorcerer’s Bad Day

I love making dioramas and small scenes that tell a story. I think, for me, it is the best part of the hobby. Don’t get me wrong, painting is a lot of fun too and I wouldn’t ever stop doing so for long but being able to craft the miniatures is just better.

I made this one as a prize for a contest give-away over on twitter. Andy, the winner, said I could either purchase a miniature for him, or create something fun. In my eyes, not much of a choice. He also came back a few days later to say he no longer wanted the miniature in question. So something fun it was!

Tyrannids are good for that, and fortunately, I had some already kicking around. I also had a chaos sorcerer, and I thought it would be good to ruin his day. Here is the result:

Highlights for me are the ripper grabbing a hold of the sorcerer’s cloak and getting flung into the air – I am sure he is having a lot of fun. There wasn’t much conversion work for this piece, just the chomping ripper, who had his tongue removed, and the ‘gaunt who is stabbing the sorcerer in the leg.

Either way, I am pleased with the result and I know Andy is too. I thoroughly enjoyed creating this and look forward to creating the next one!

Black Library Submission – take 2

I was unsure whether I was going to bother entering anything for the Black Library Open Submissions this time around. I’ve been busy getting the commission business all set up and going and I spent the majority of my time painting. It would be a shame not to though, these opportunities don’t come around very often and it would be a waste not to take it while it’s there.

The theme this time is Brotherhood, with a choice of different themes to write within that. They want to see groups of individual working together, and seeing how I like creating Warbands and such, it gave me the kick I needed to flesh out some of my half created characters.

I decided to go for the group who would have made the diorama had I finished it in time. The Ludicrous Seven. They consist of the following character:

Kycius – an Iron Warrior who likes to think he is in charge.

Roushal – A Noise Marine who talks too fast and too much.

Abraxas – A Khorne Berzerker who is surprisingly together when not in a fight.

Festus – A Plague Marine – he needs the most work.

Shabaka – A Thousand Son sorcerer with delusions of grandure

Sarlath – A Night Lord without the ability to speak

Davidus – An Ultramarine Skeleton.

They are an interesting bunch who are slowly taking shape in my mind. I have a lot of work to do on them, but I have a rough outline and a plot that grows each day. I am looking forward to seeing where their tale goes at the very least! For now, have this short scribble and some pictures of the miniatures:

Crouching behind an overly large rock, the three of them exchanged glances. Between them and their target were countless more of the demon things. Kycius sucked in a breath. Before he could stop him, Roushal poked his head up before immediately ducking down. “There’s ten thousand, I counted real quick.” Kycius looked at Shabaka, who rolled his eyes.

Khorne Berzerkers!

I didn’t manage to get the Khorne Berzerker unit finished yesterday, so I finished them off today. I have to say that I am not keen on the sculpts – I think that the posing on them is a bit silly. Some of them look as though they are doing a dance or the conga, which makes them less scary and more laughable. I picked these ones up second hand however and wanted to use them as practice for the airbrush.

I still have a long way to go when it comes to smooth transitions and even covering in regards to the airbrush. I need to work on consistency of the paint too. At times, it came out the airbrush too watery, so I had made it too thin. I don’t want to make it too thick either as than it clogs up the airbrush instead. It is a learning curve however and I know what too thin looks like at least.

When I had finished them, I did get to use liberal amounts of blood for the blood god, which gave them that fighting, gorey look that is associated with Khorne. I am pleased with them for the most part, and I learned a fair bit painting them too.

Chaos Raptors

Remember these guys from the other day?

I have done some more work on them and got them finished! I wanted to build on the base I had given them with the airbrush and so have worked on them today. I’ve picked out gold trim and popped some bleached bone on the spiky protrusions. I’ve added some silver, washed a couple of areas and put them on the right sized bases. I didn’t want to spend too much time on them simply because I feel that the base red needed to be a bit stronger. They were an experiment after all, one that partially worked at least. I learned a good deal about using the airbrush and the use of the colours I have chosen as well. The red needs to be stronger on the lower areas of the miniatures, which is something I can do next time.

Either way, these lads will be on their way to a new home soon enough and be mangling whatever forces come their way. I’m pleased with them and what I have learned at the very least!
