Everchosen: Results!

Today was the day! I took both Abaddon and the Brood Lord, Night Lord combo in to Games Workshop for the public voting part of Everchosen. I placed the miniatures in the store at about half 10. Voting wasn’t until 1 however, so after a chat with some pals, I went for a walk around.

When I returned, it was voting time! I wasn’t able to vote in the categories I had entered, but I was able to do so in the Young Bloods. It is always hard choosing the best, as I know the time and effort that goes into painting a miniature. Each one of the youngsters spent a great deal of both and it really showed. I did managed to get some pictures, though I am unsure how clear they are:

The worst part was the waiting. I hate waiting at the best of times.

When the results came in, I found I had done well. The Night Lord/Brood Lord combo came third in the Open Category, which considering it was made of miniatures I had painted about six months ago and was put together on a whim, I was really pleased with.

Abaddon in the Everchosen category, by a margin of one (1) point, came second. Something I am thrilled with. I’ve only been painting to this high a level for about a year now and it was the first time I have ever tried Non-Metallic Metals. I learned a great deal doing both miniatures and am very proud of my results. For the end to be that close as well makes me all the more pleased.

I am going to display these in the hobby room!

Now, I need to think about what crazy thing I am going to work on next, between the commissions I have and the Kill Team I am part way through painting!

Nighthaunts!

I am proud of myself. Usually, finishing a unit off has been a struggle when working on personal projects. So, when I finished the Nighthaunt half of the Soul Wars box, I felt very pleased with myself. I managed to stick at them and have now got them all done. I really liked the miniatures, they were a lot of fun to paint. I have chosen a relatively simple scheme for them, which was quick to replicate and carry over to other miniatures. I think they look great together, and individually.

I have tried to take some pictures of them together, but it was a bit tricky. They wouldn’t all go on the light box as it was too small, so I had to use the old fashioned paper and box method. I hope they do them justice. I’ve also put the individual images up so you can see them all that way as well!

All of these miniatures, and more, are available for sale on my ebay page:

I will always entertain reasonable offers as well, so please get in touch on any of my social media sites if you’re interested.

I am also open for commissions!

Diorama Update: The Plague Marine

I only have one Space Marine left to paint for this diorama now and that is the Khorne Berserker. He needs to be assembled after the Trigon and tank so I know what he is going to look like a bit better.

Today then, I painted the Plague Marine. I rather like Plague Marines, I feel they have an individual flavour to them. I had picked out an old metal one to use, however when he was next to the other marines, he looked too small, so I changed my mind and went for this one instead:

I liked his pose, it will look as though he is going to blast some Hormagaunt to pieces, which is his job! He will need final touch ups and adjustments here and there but for now, he is done.

I have also done some experimenting on the base in regards to texture. More on that soon, when the base itself is all done. I might make that one a tutorial, as it has been a real learning curve for me too.

Diorama Update: Hormagaunts

I managed to get all four Hormagaunts finished today, which was a bit of relief. Most of the medium miniatures for the diorama are now done. I feel like I am at least making some progress towards getting it finished. Two weeks today and it shall all be over. I am going to get it all done but I do know there is a long way to go yet.

Before I give an update on the ‘to do’ list for it, here are some shots of the Tyranids who will be harrassing the Ridiculous Six.

A few days ago, during a freak out, a friend suggested I made a list to organise my thoughts on where I am up to. It worked. I have it on a post it note next to my hobby desk. It looks a but like this:

Finish the base: Plaster it, texture it with sand, undercoat it, paint it.

Electronics within the tank, build the tank around it, paint the tank.

The Trigon and the Khorne berserker.

Place everything

Small miniatures – the Nurgling, the Rippers, other little features.

Highlight it all.

After that, it should be done and dusted, competition ready. Honestly, I do not think I will win at all, I’m convinced I am not at the right level for it. I do like the challenge however and I am doing this to prove I can. No one else had electronics last year and I am more than surprised that this is something that hasn’t been explored more by others. It is surprisingly easy to get the parts and learn how to do it.

The Sorcerer

As I mentioned in my last post, I have also finished the Black Legion Sorcerer for the diorama. I painted him straight after the Noise Marine but I wanted him to have a post all to himself. I am not so sure that his highlights are as sharp, and I do know I will alter a few bits here and there as I go along. Well, here he is in all his shiny, malicious glory.

I want to add some light to his hand to that it looks like he is summoning up some warp power to blast away a tyranid.

I am also pleased with his mis-matched armour. I was concerned at first that it would look silly, however now I look at him, I think it fits. His armour would be mismatched, his original set was probably destroyed so he stole them off some poor dead space marine on some long forgotten battle ground.

Other things I have also done include plaster the foam base and undercoat the tyranids – the Brood Lord and the Hormagaunts. As I am away for a couple of days, the next update will be after the bank holiday!

Time for a Change.

Usually, I keep this blog for my hobby related exploits, but I feel I need to speak about the largest change I have made in my life and the uncertainty that brings. As many of you are aware, I have been in the teaching profession in one way or another for the last seven years. It had been a rollercoaster and I hace decided, for health reasons, that it is time to step off and do something else.

The last week has been difficult for a number of reasons. The class I have taught this year have been th best set of children I have ever had and I will miss them. I know they will miss me too.

One of the hardest parts was Tuesday, when it was the last Warhammer Club. The children were confident enough to run their own game, using the miniatures they had bought and painted themselves. I spent the hour showing those that were not playing how I would go about painting one of the ghouls a member had brought in.

I introduced wet blending and some drybrushing before leaving the little guy on my desktop to dry. Bob was concerned about this intruder but thankfully, there was no trouble…

I also let the children take the miniatures home and I certainly hope they continue with the hobby. They certainly seemed interested in it and it had been a true honour to show them how much fun miniature gaming is.

The rest of the week was a mix of fun. On the last day, we watched Disney’s Robin Hood, had a Just Dance contest and played a lot of games. I was thoroughly spoilt and saddened to see the children go. I shall miss collegues and have made some great friends as well. I have packed away the post it note pictures, brought my miniatures home and managed to relax a little too.

There is one thing on my mind at the moment however, and that is ‘What now?’ Education had been the centre of my life for seven years and now I am left wondering what to do. I am fortunate enough to not need to find work immediately, however that is not indefinite. I know something will come along when it is ready and I will find work, until then, I am going to try and take some commissions and spend some time in the hobby room painting.

Incidentally, if you are interested in commissioning me for painting, here is a link to the information you need:

More Drawings

I am very much enjoying the drawings I am making for my friends over on Tumblr/Discord. Their characters, both canon and own, are interesting and fun. I have spent this afternoon working on a couple more.

Brel

This handsome fellow is Brel, a techmarine of the Blood Ravens. He is an interesting fellow, a little eccentric but a fantastic character to write with.

Cypher

If you’re not sure who this is, then I might have to come and get you! I’m not sure who is more adorable; this murderer or Sevatar. The person who write Cypher is a most excellent individual and I have known them a long time now. (Long in internet terms, its a couple of years I think) They’ve been most excellent and their relationship with Cypher is always good to hear about.

There will be more drawings soon.

Suddenly, drawings!

I have never made it a secret that I write. I do a lot of RP writing on Tumblr with a great bunch of people. I maybe do this too much but I find it enjoyable and while it might not be the most consrtructive of passtimes, it is a lot of fun. Over the years, I have made many a friend through RP and the group I find myself with at the moment are among the best of them.

I speak with them on Discord and have been supported by them in times of trouble and woe. So, in order to pay them back for their unending support and friendship, I decided to draw them all.

Here are the first two, which are now finished:

Some of them write canon characters, some of them write their own. Some of them write several at once.

My drawing style, when I am not relying on templates, always seems to return to the ‘Chibi’ style – small, cute with large heads. When I drew Sevatar, I stunned myself with how he turned out. No murderer had any right to look that adorable!

Anyway, I wanted to share my thoughts on them here. There are going to be thirteen of them in the picture and I am already most of the way through drawing number three. I shall share some more when they are all done!

Diorama: Phase 1.

An amazing thing happened this Wednesday. Due to illness, we were unable to meet up with the rest of the Warmongers from twitter at Warhammer World. It was disappointing but there is no need to spread germs needlessly so we stayed away. So, when a random envelope came through the door, I was rather confused. Contained within was a ticket to Warhammer Fest in May, some funds and a lovely card with Abaddon on the front wishing me good luck. The onion cutters arrived shortly after and I was exceptionally touched. Apparently, Warhammer Fest was not going to be the same without me…

The next thought went something along the lines of ‘I only have two months to sort out my Golden Demon entry.’

Work began this Saturday.

The first step was to create the base out of expanding foam. We placed a take away foil tub upside down and sprayed around it:

We then realised it took twelve hours to dry…

We had to make sure the foam was flat to the floor as well, else it would look silly on the base. We took a saw to the bottom to make sure it sat correctly.

IMG_3297.JPG

When it was all foamed up and dry, I was able to cut into the shape I thought would be best. It looked quite different when I was done.

This is not the landraider I intend to use, this is an old one I picked up ages ago which I am just using to get the right idea.

The next step was gathering together all the bits I needed to create the miniatures. This took a lot longer than I thought it would but now, the only thing I am missing are some rippers. Everything else is set for phase 2.

Branching Out

I love Space Marines. I love painting them, I love reading about them, I love writing about them. I even love playing with them. Of course I have favourites but I love them all really. There is no real secret around that.

I have learned however, that not everyone else loves Space Marines in the same way I do. It is a shame but we cannot all be the same, that would be boring.

I was chatting to my sister the other night about commissions and how it is going when I said that I felt that although what I have painted and displayed on this blog is decent, it is all very much of the Space Marine flavour and that I felt I should do some other miniatures to prove that I can paint other things. She readily agreed with me.

So, this morning, she allowed me to raid her and her husband’s bits box for anything that I feel might be useful. This is what I found:

There is only one Space Marine in this bunch of miniatures! Only one! There are also a couple of Warmachine dudes as well, so they should be interesting. Some of these are old, some are new. Some need repairing, some are in excellent condition. They were all just sitting in the garage doing nothing too. This should keep me busy for some time and will offer a little more diversity for the examples page. Watch this space for sure.

In the meantime, if you do want to commission me for anything, feel free to get in touch. I promise I do not bite.
