Golden Demon Take 3 – Conversions

In order for the diorama to look how I want it to, I need to make some changes to the miniatures I am using. Most plastic kits are dynamic these days, which makes doing so a little bit tricker, but with a bit of willingness to have a go and see, I have found it to be ok. Admittedly, the changes I am making are fairly small, so until I tackle a larger conversion, I cannot comment.

I started with Mephiston. I needed to make him a hand with the palm out to look like he is creating a force shield with it. I used a couple of different parts for this. One was a hand from a tank driver that I had spare from the Execusioner boxed set. I then used a spare Intercessor arm and matched the two together. I then had to find a leg for Mephiston. He has one, but the other in the kit is hidden behind layers of skirt. In the diorama, he is supposed to be floating in the air, so I stole a leg from an intercessor, carved out a space for it in the skirt part and now he has two legs! Here are his parts layed out – I am not assembling him fully yet because I want to paint some of the parts seperately.

Next was Doom Breed. I am using the demon prince kit for that, and so it was fairly simple to pick the bits I want and assemble them, again in parts. He is described as having a reptilian face with forward facing horns in the short story, so I had to alter the face in order to fit this. All I did was take the horns off one of the head and replace them onto the other. The rest was relatively simple. I know I am going to have to use a bit of greenstuff to fill gaps and smooth lines, but here he is for the time being:

Next will be playing around with liquid resin stuff and that UV torch I picked up at Vapnartak!

Golden demon – the base.

Today I got to tinker around with my idea for golden demon. I want to create a diorama – because they are cool – between Mephiston and Doombreed, as I have mentioned before.

I now have all the parts I need except the base itself and I needed to know what size it had to be before anything else. I gathered some scenery, some proxies and began tinkering around with them:

I am going for the last one.

So, I need to get some clear Perspex in order to build the lava on. I think A5 size is perfect for it too.

Next step will be assembling the actual miniatures and going from there.

Golden Demon – 2020

While I was away, Warhammer Fest was announced and therefore Golden Demon too. I want to enter this year after last year’s did not get finished. I underestimated how much time I would need and I was working as a teacher then, so ran out of time.

This year, I want to re-create a scene from one of the Mephiston short stories by David Annandale. In Lord of Death, Mephiston battles a demon prince named Doombreed. I love the scene, especially when he tries to play ‘the floor is lava’ with a demon. There is a lot going on in the scene, and I get a lot of enjoyment out of creating dioramas, so there we are. That is my challenge.

I have a concept sketch, which is silly, full of little notes and ideas, and a basic parts list:

ConceptParts

I have a lot to think about, and some parts to source as well. At this stage, I am also open to suggestions as well. It will involve a bit of conversion work, a lot of patience and a great deal of effort as well. Still, it’s not worth doing if it isn’t going to push me to try new things, and it will be worth it regardless!

Diorama Update: The Plague Marine

I only have one Space Marine left to paint for this diorama now and that is the Khorne Berserker. He needs to be assembled after the Trigon and tank so I know what he is going to look like a bit better.

Today then, I painted the Plague Marine. I rather like Plague Marines, I feel they have an individual flavour to them. I had picked out an old metal one to use, however when he was next to the other marines, he looked too small, so I changed my mind and went for this one instead:

I liked his pose, it will look as though he is going to blast some Hormagaunt to pieces, which is his job! He will need final touch ups and adjustments here and there but for now, he is done.

I have also done some experimenting on the base in regards to texture. More on that soon, when the base itself is all done. I might make that one a tutorial, as it has been a real learning curve for me too.

Diorama Update: The Nurgling and foes

It seems I am only blogging about the Golden Demon diorama at the moment, it is only two weeks away however and I still have a long way to go to finish it. Soon, other subjects will be covered but right now, I have to stay focused.

Today’s efforts went into painting the Nurgling, the bug thing I found, and the Rippers. I had no idea what the bug thing was or where it came from until I asked the Twitter Hive Mind. It turns out it is a Wood Elf Tree Sprite. I have no idea how it ended up in my bits box but it seemed to fit the mood of the diorama so it got painted and will be added to the base.

Here they are in all their small glory:

Work on the base itself has continued, and that is shaping up really well. I shall do a complete post about that when it is done though, I don’t want to spoil that.

Tomorrow’s job shall be looking at the plague marine. I can do this. I can!!

Diorama Update: Hormagaunts

I managed to get all four Hormagaunts finished today, which was a bit of relief. Most of the medium miniatures for the diorama are now done. I feel like I am at least making some progress towards getting it finished. Two weeks today and it shall all be over. I am going to get it all done but I do know there is a long way to go yet.

Before I give an update on the ‘to do’ list for it, here are some shots of the Tyranids who will be harrassing the Ridiculous Six.

A few days ago, during a freak out, a friend suggested I made a list to organise my thoughts on where I am up to. It worked. I have it on a post it note next to my hobby desk. It looks a but like this:

Finish the base: Plaster it, texture it with sand, undercoat it, paint it.

Electronics within the tank, build the tank around it, paint the tank.

The Trigon and the Khorne berserker.

Place everything

Small miniatures – the Nurgling, the Rippers, other little features.

Highlight it all.

After that, it should be done and dusted, competition ready. Honestly, I do not think I will win at all, I’m convinced I am not at the right level for it. I do like the challenge however and I am doing this to prove I can. No one else had electronics last year and I am more than surprised that this is something that hasn’t been explored more by others. It is surprisingly easy to get the parts and learn how to do it.

Diorama Update – The Brood Lord

I have painted something that is not a Space Marine, this is a bit of a novelty and something rather different than the usual power armour. However, seeing as the diorama had beings other than Space Marines on it, I knew there would come a time where I had to get on and just paint.

I had a conversation with some friends a while ago about the colour scheme for the Tyranids I was going to paint. A few ideas were thrown around until I settled on Hive Fleet Behemoth. I wanted something to contrast the black and gold of the Black Legion and bright red and tuquoise seemed like the perfect hues to go for. I started with the Brood Lord because I really wanted to see what it was going to look like with the Night Lord jumping on his back. Here are the results:

I changed my usual technique for him as well as I wanted the Brood Lord to look more organic than the crisp lines of power armour. The red particularly involved a lot of drybrushing and layering up the colours. The spines were wet blended using a varying degree of turquoise. I am very pleased with how he turned out.

And for the curious among us, here is a rough mock-up of this section of the diorama:

Both need touch ups and adjustments, but that can happen when I come to glue them together properly and place them.

Next job: Hormagaunts.

The Sorcerer

As I mentioned in my last post, I have also finished the Black Legion Sorcerer for the diorama. I painted him straight after the Noise Marine but I wanted him to have a post all to himself. I am not so sure that his highlights are as sharp, and I do know I will alter a few bits here and there as I go along. Well, here he is in all his shiny, malicious glory.

I want to add some light to his hand to that it looks like he is summoning up some warp power to blast away a tyranid.

I am also pleased with his mis-matched armour. I was concerned at first that it would look silly, however now I look at him, I think it fits. His armour would be mismatched, his original set was probably destroyed so he stole them off some poor dead space marine on some long forgotten battle ground.

Other things I have also done include plaster the foam base and undercoat the tyranids – the Brood Lord and the Hormagaunts. As I am away for a couple of days, the next update will be after the bank holiday!

The Noise Marine

Today was a resounding success in terms of painting miniatures for the diorama. I set out to get at least one of them finished and I managed two! How novel. This post is about the Noise Marine, who looks rather stunning in black and gold. Here he is, mostly finished and awating the Land Raider to be finished so he can perch on the top and rock out.

He is not perfect but final touch ups will be done when the diorama is more assembled. One friend of mine pointed out that he looked a little like he was dressed for a bondage gig. On hearing this, another insisted that the safe word was ‘Warmaster.’

One thing is certain, I am very pleased with how this mini has turned out. I think the highlights are particularly sharp.

I also finished the sorcerer, but I’ll post about him tomorrow.

Diorama Update – The Night Lord

Seeing as today everyone had either gone back to work, or gone home, I had the time to work on the miniatures for the diorama. The Night Lord’s head had been dropped off and I thought it would be a good opportunity to get him all finished off.

The first decision I made was about his bat wings. I decided to go with red rather than black as I wanted them to stand out. This was the right choice, as you will see below. When it was all done and I was mostly happy with him. I put him together and he looked like this:

Now, I was very pleased with this result, so I couldn’t resist seeing roughly what he would look like when on his opponent. Once again, I was exceptionally pleased with how it is going to look.

Look at him! Jumping on a Brood Lord, about to stab him in the brains. There is still a few things I plan to tweak here and there. I might try and get it so the claws are already in the Brood Lord’s head, but we shall see.

Now all he needs is a name and a reason to be in the Warband…
