Tutorial: Rust Effect

I recently experimented with some rusty barrels on a diorama and decided I would write a tutorial on it for a couple of reasons: One, so other people can create the same effect should they want to. Two, so I can look it up when I want to do so again in the future and can remember how it’s done.

Equipment: Typhus Corrosion, Skagg Brown, Jokero Orange, Leadbelcher, Agrax Earthshade, Nihilakh Oxide.

I have used a wall for this, but it would work well on pipes or anything that might get rusty!

Step 1:

Paint the entire surface with Typhus Corrosion – this will add the rusty texture which we need for the next steps.

Step 2:

Drybrush with Skagg brown – those texture areas will start to show up in this and the next steps.

Step 3:

Looking a bit corroded there.

Step 4:

Stipple on silver, or other metallic colour, to show fresh chips in the rust.

Step 5:

Use Agrax Earthshade to put in some darker areas where crud might run.

Step 6:

Use Nihilakh Oxide to add a bit of colour to the deeper parts – maybe these were made of copper and are now tarnished!

Finished! Simple way to make an effective rust pattern!

Dragonheist: D&D Miniatures

I have started playing in a new campaign recently, and that means new miniatures. I really love painted minis for D&D games, I feel it adds a new level to the game as I have mentioned before in previous posts.

This time, I am playing a half-orc monk. There is also a rabbit-person (I cannot remember what they are called in game) and a human warlock. We are playing a bunch of police officers and shall be investigating the goings on in Waterdeep.

The minis have turned out really well. I particularly liked using purple to shade the orc skin and I will definitely be looking at doing something like that again to refine the technique.

There is also a bonus witch, who I finished at the same time!

Tonie – something a bit different.

I was recently contacted by a fellow on instagram who wanted something painting as a gift for his daughter. He explained to me that what he wanted painting was a thing called a ‘tonie.’ I had never heard of these before, considering I do not have children though, this is not surprising.

What the device does is enables you to record a message onto it, which can be played back to the child at any time. They are customisable too, so I was asked if I could paint it to look like his daughter.

I had to ensure that both the paints I use and the varnish are ‘child friendly’ first, once that was established, I was more than happy to have a go. Here are the results:

It was nice to paint something different too – I’ve never done anything like this before, and I do enjoy a challenge.

Forster’s Foundry!

Finally, we are ready to launch the website for 3D Printing!

It has been a gruelling few weeks of vat issues, build plate problems and brittle resin. We have spent a good deal of time tinkering and fixing up the 3D printers and the website and we feel we are finally ready to launch.

We are licensed to sell the Lunar Auxiliar range, and here are some of the miniatures we are currently offering:

As well as these miniatures, we are offering a ‘Print and Paint’ service. Where you supply us with a file of a miniature you have created on another site, and we will print it and paint it for you. We also offer just printing if you want to paint your miniature yourself. Here is one example that had been done so far:

The website is:

Feel free to get in touch if you have questions or want to know more about what we do!

Legit Members of the Black Legion…

I bought these two miniatures at a War Boot some time ago and have had them both half finished for almost as long. I had a bit of time to finally get them finished this week and I am really pleased with how they turned out. I do not collect Alpha Legion, however I thought these two looked interesting so decided to paint them as Black Legion. I wanted to show they were infiltrating, as the Alpha Legion do, and their disguises were not that good.

I used green contrast paint over silver to make the chips and then highlighted the edges with light grey to match the other highlights. I also painted the Chaos Star over the Alpha Legion symbol to add to the rubbishness of their disguise attempt. I am pleased with them as they are a bit of fun more than anything else.

Store!

As many of you know, this blog space also has a store. I have also mentioned that I am in the process of buying a house. I am selling several bits off to help raise funds for this pending move. It will also mean I do not have to package up other bits in order to move them nearer the time.

If there is anything you have seen on this blog that you are interested in, please get in touch I am sure we can work something out – even if it is not in the store!

Necromuda

I have a lot going on other than in my Warhammer/hobby life at the moment but that doesn’t mean I have stopped painting. I have managed to paint up some more Necromunda Palantine Enforcers, which I thoroughly enjoyed doing. I liked the ones I did for a commission so decided to get some of my own to paint. I stick to the colour scheme on the box as I really think this is effective. This is how they turned out:

I really liked the fact that these miniatures came with the moulded bases, and the opportunity to use a fairly limited colour palette. The yellow really stands out about the shades of blue and grey and I think they look good. The added bonus was they did not take that long to paint at all!

Shadows of Brimstone Miniatures

Something a bit different was in order today. I wanted to have a break from painting Space Marines and Games Workshop miniatures, so broke out some of the board game ones that have been hanging around the house for ages. Shadows of Brimstone, for those that don’t know is an adventure game. The best way I can describe it is Wild West, Cthulu Warhammer Quest. It has a variety of expansions, and I have been painting some from the Space Ship one, as well as finishing off some others as well. Here they are:

I have used a range of different techniques to paint these miniatures. Including contrast paint over silver, speed painting and using tape to create lines on bases. I have a few more to finish as well, and I will likely work on these over the weekend. Although the quality of the miniature is not the same as Games Workshop, I have really enjoyed the change!

Blackstone Fortress and Speed Painting

A return client recently asked me to build and base coat some miniatures for Blackstone Fortress with the intention of finishing them off himself. I agreed of course and set about doing so. The difference this time was that the client wanted me to follow a speed painting video with the base coats. Interesting. I am not one for watching videos about painting, I like to see a picture and work out how it is done myself, or read a step by step tutorial like ones I have made myself. Still, I am always up for learning new things and so I gave it a go.

After talking about the techniques, I was then asked to just do the whole thing – which I was happy to do. The whole set of minaitures took me under twelve hours to finish, which I think is good timing, and the videos were super easy to follow. Here are the miniatures, I will pop a link to the youtube videos at the end of the post.

I really enjoyed this method of painting, it was quick, looks effective and easy. The videos were by Midwinter Miniatures over on youtube, the link below will take you to their page:

Mephiston: The Diorama

Before the world went mad, I had planned on creating a diorama of Mephiston fighting a demon – Doonbreed – for a Golden Demon entry. A lot has happened and the event was cancelled. The parts of the diorama have been left in a box mostly forgotten about until the other day. I thought, it might not be for Golden Demon anymore, but it would be a shame to waste the parts I had collected. So I started working on it again last week. Fridays have become my ‘skills’ day – where I try new things and practice existing skills in a way that I am unable to while doing commission work.

Here are some snaps of the mock up:

The idea is that he will be landing on the pipe in order to mess up a horde of demons on the larger base. I want the smaller base to be able to come off in case I get the insane notion of using this large, tall miniature on the tabletop… Yeah, maybe not but the practice of building up a scenic base won’t be a bad thing.

So, next task was to crack on and paint him. He is in sub assembly in order for me to get into the hard to reach spots without making too much of a mess. Here are some of the parts:

I have quite a way to go with this as yet, but I am pleased with the progress. I have also done work on his cloak, but I am saving that for another post as I want to really talk about the process of creating it.
